Building autonomous research agents: lessons from the field

The promise of agentic AI in market research is compelling: systems that autonomously design studies, collect data, and generate insights. But building these systems in production reveals challenges that no demo or proof-of-concept prepares you for.

The orchestration problem

A research agent is not a single model making a single call. It is an orchestrated system: one component designs the methodology, another generates the instrument, a third manages distribution, and a fourth analyses the results. Each component must understand its role and hand off context cleanly to the next.

In practice, we found that the biggest failures were not in individual components but in handoffs. A methodology agent might design a study requiring quota interlocks that the instrument agent could not implement.

Guardrails, not guidelines

Agentic systems need hard constraints, not soft suggestions. When an agent is autonomously generating survey logic, it must be constrained by professional MR methodology — validated question types, proper skip logic patterns, and statistically sound quota structures.

The human-in-the-loop question

Full autonomy is not always the goal. The most effective agentic research systems position the human as reviewer, not operator. The agent does 90% of the work; the researcher validates, adjusts, and approves.
